A tragic incident occurred on Friday evening, April 18, 2025, at the University of llesa, Osun State, where a 100-level Business Administration student, Gbolahan Ojolo, was electrocuted while using his mobile phone during a thunderstorm.
Truth Live News gathered that this event took place at a private hostel near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) junction in Ilesa. Reports indicate that Gbolahan was playing a game on his phone, which was plugged into an electrical outlet, when lightning struck, leading to his electrocution. He was rushed to Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, but was declared dead upon arrival.
The university’s management, through Registrar Funso Ojo, expressed deep regret over the incident and confirmed that the police have initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Asaolu, along with other university officials and the Area Commander of Police, personally consoled Gbolahan’s father upon his arrival in Ilesa. The university has pledged ongoing support to the bereaved family during this period of intense grief.
This unfortunate event serves as a somber reminder of the dangers associated with using electronic devices during thunderstorms.
