CALABAR, NIGERIA –  The Calabar Municipal Government has issued a public warning about an abandoned communication mast that threatens lives and property in the city.

The mast, located behind the Cross River State Headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service along IBB Way, has been left unattended for over 20 years.

Authorities warn that its deteriorating condition, combined with expected heavy rainfall and strong winds, could lead to its collapse, potentially causing significant damage and loss of life.

Residents living near the mast have expressed fear over the looming disaster. “We have complained about this structure for years, but nothing has been done,” said Emmanuel Okon, a local business owner. “If it falls, it could destroy homes, vehicles, and even take lives.”

In response, the Calabar Municipal Council has ordered the owner of the mast to remove it within 21 days. If the owner fails to act, the government will take down the structure at the owner’s expense.

Officials are urging residents to stay alert and report any further signs of structural weakness. “We cannot afford to ignore this risk any longer,” said Chief Press Secretary Oqua E. Etim. “The safety of our people comes first.”

Truth Live News reports that the Community members have called for stricter regulations on abandoned infrastructure to prevent similar hazards in the future.
