Tragedy struck the jubilant atmosphere in Conakry, Guinea, as six passionate Guinean football supporters lost their lives while celebrating the nation’s historic victory at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The Guinean Football Federation revealed on Monday that the unfortunate incident occurred during exuberant celebrations on the streets of the capital.
The fervor erupted after Guinea secured a triumphant 1-0 win over The Gambia in their second group game on Friday night, marking the country’s initial victory in the tournament.
However, the festivities, marked by joyous car parades and motorcycle processions, turned tragic as the celebratory spirit led to unforeseen fatalities.
Addressing the incident, Amadou Makadji, the media manager for Feguifoot, emphasized the importance of measured celebration.
He stated, “What is important is that our fans and the public celebrate in a very measured fashion. They have to be very careful to not put themselves in danger because the goal of football is to bring joy and not leave families bereaved.”
Highlighting the passionate football culture in Guinea, Makadji urged caution to prevent further tragedies, emphasizing that the essence of football is to bring joy, not sorrow.
Guinea currently holds the second position in Group C, securing four points, trailing behind reigning champions Senegal by two points and leading third-placed Cameroon by three points. The Gambia remains at the bottom of the group with one point.
