Aga Khan IV, Prince Shah Karim Al Hussaini, the spiritual leader of Nizari Ismaili Muslims worldwide, has passed away in Lisbon at the age of 88, according to his development network.
He was born in Switzerland and holding British citizenship.
The Aga Khan was a prominent philanthropist and business magnate who led the Shia Ismaili Muslims as their 49th hereditary Imam.
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) announced his passing in a statement, saying, “His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), passed away peacefully in Lisbon on 4 February 2025, aged 88, surrounded by his family”.
” The network added that the announcement of his designated successor will follow”.
The Aga Khan’s life was marked by his leadership of the Ismaili Muslim community, as well as his business ventures and philanthropic efforts.
He was a student when his grandfather appointed him as his successor, bypassing his father.
Over the decades, the Aga Khan evolved into a successful business magnate and philanthropist, known for his commitment to global development and improving the lives of impoverished communities.
