Nigeria experienced a widespread power outage on Monday, October 14, as the national grid suffered another collapse, leaving millions without electricity across multiple states. The collapse occurred at 6:48 p.m., affecting electricity distribution networks nationwide, including the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC).
Emeka Ezeh, spokesperson for EEDC, confirmed the incident in an official statement. “The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) wishes to inform its esteemed customers of a general system collapse that occurred at 18:48 hours today, 14th October 2024. This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the EEDC network,” the statement read. The blackout has impacted customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States. Ezeh added that EEDC is awaiting further details from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo regarding the cause of the collapse and when power might be restored.
Similarly, Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), which services the Lagos and surrounding areas, issued its own statement, notifying customers of the outage. “Dear Valued Customer, kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 18:48hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network. We are currently working with our partners for a speedy restoration of the grid,” the company stated, asking customers to remain patient as efforts were underway to resolve the issue.
This latest grid collapse adds to the series of power disruptions Nigeria has faced in recent months, underscoring the ongoing challenges of managing the country’s electricity infrastructure. National authorities have yet to provide a timeline for full restoration of power, leaving many citizens and businesses grappling with the consequences of the blackout.
