The former Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the PDP held a World Press Conference today 30th October 2023.
These are the highlights of his speech

Atiku Abubakar expressed concern over the potential consequences of the Supreme Court’s judgment on the presidential election petition, emphasizing the importance of upholding legality and democracy.

He argued that the Supreme Court’s decision could have long-lasting impacts on Nigeria, beyond the current government’s term.

Atiku Abubakar highlighted his history of advocating for democracy, even in the face of personal risks, and mentioned his efforts to challenge the election results through legal means.

He raised concerns about electoral irregularities, violence, and the actions of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the election process.

Atiku Abubakar suggested that the Supreme Court’s decision revealed issues within the judiciary and the politicization of institutions like the court and the electoral commission.

He called for electoral reforms and transparency, proposing the use of electronic voting, resolution of legal disputes before inauguration, and a runoff system for candidates not achieving a majority of votes.

Atiku Abubakar also recommended a single six-year term for the President, rotated among the six geopolitical zones, to promote equity and prevent the exclusion of certain regions.

He suggested that INEC should be mandated to verify candidates’ credentials, and inconsistencies or forgeries should disqualify a candidate.

The former Vice President stressed the need for reforms in the judiciary, including an automated case assignment system, transparency in judge appointments, and evaluations of judges’ performance.

Overall, Atiku Abubakar’s message was centered on strengthening democracy, electoral transparency, and ensuring that the rights of voters are protected.
