Benin City , Edo State
The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has recently intervened to prevent what it claims was an attempt to hold a turbanning ceremony in Benin City, Edo South.
Truth Live News gathered that the alleged event, organized by an individual claiming the title “His Royal Highness Alh. Adamu Isah Adamu,” aimed to install “Alh. Danjuma Garba Binkola” as “Garkuwan Hausawan Benin.” The BTC, in a public announcement, denounced the planned ceremony as a violation of Benin tradition and customary law. This article delves into the details of the BTC’s actions and the wider implications of the alleged event.
The BTC, in its public announcement dated April 18, 2024, explicitly stated its opposition to the turbanning ceremony. It emphasized its authority in chieftaincy matters within the seven local government areas of Edo South Senatorial District and asserted that the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Ewuare II, had not consented to or approved the ceremony.
The council warned against violating the sanctity of Benin tradition and customary law and urged the individuals involved to cancel the planned event.
Some observers have speculated that the attempted turbanning ceremony is part of a broader agenda to undermine the traditional structures of the Benin Kingdom. The notion of installing an “Emir” within the Benin Kingdom raises concerns about potential cultural and religious implications. Critics fear that such actions could erode the ancient tools of the Benin Kingdom and diminish its cultural heritage.
The public is now waiting for a response from the state governor, Godwin Obaseki, regarding the BTC’s intervention and the broader implications of the alleged attempt to Islamize Edo South. As a key figure in the state, Governor Obaseki’s stance on this matter will likely influence public perception and future actions.
The BTC’s intervention to prevent the turbanning ceremony buttressed the importance of preserving Benin tradition and customary law.
The alleged attempt to introduce an alternative chieftaincy structure has raised concerns about the preservation of the Benin Kingdom’s cultural heritage. As the public awaits further developments, the response of Governor Obaseki will be crucial in addressing these concerns and ensuring the protection of Benin’s cultural identity.
