The Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, graced the 15th coronation anniversary of the esteemed Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V. The event, held at Adiabo, the monarch’s country home, coincided with the annual Utomo Obong festival.
During her address, Dr. Edu commended the rich cultural heritage showcased at the Utomo Obong festival. She extended congratulations to the Obong on his 15th coronation anniversary, praising his role as a unifying figure for the diverse clans in Cross River State.
Expressing shared values of culture and unity, Dr. Edu conveyed a message from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasizing their commitment to collaboration for the peace and development of Cross River State and Nigeria as a whole.
Highlighting President Tinubu’s dedication to eradicating poverty, Dr. Edu announced the federal government’s initiative to launch grants for the very poor and vulnerable groups in Cross River State. The event, scheduled for Christmas day at Millennium Park, aims to inject hope and support into the grassroots communities.
In a statement made available to Truth Live News, Dr. Edu outlined the president’s directive to bring smiles to the faces of the less fortunate during the festive season. The grants, distributed in collaboration with the Cross River State Government, are intended to empower individuals to establish micro-businesses, providing a sustainable path out of poverty.
The Minister assured that Cross River State holds a special place in President Tinubu’s agenda, hinting at a comprehensive package for the state and others, set to unfold in the coming year.
In preparation for the initiative, Dr. Edu revealed that her Ministry has meticulously compiled a checklist of potential beneficiaries. Through engagement with traditional rulers and community leaders, they have identified those meeting the criteria outlined in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
As the Christmas season approaches, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation as the Minister, in alignment with President Tinubu’s vision, seeks to bring tangible positive changes to the lives of the less privileged in her home state.
