Doyin Okupe, former Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, has resigned from the party, citing ideological differences as the driving force behind his decision.
In his letter duly monitored by Truth Live News, Okupe expressed gratitude for the party’s platform but emphasized his lifelong rightist and Liberal Democrat principles, leading to the conflicting left-of-center roots of the Labour Party. This departure follows Okupe’s withdrawal from Peter Obi’s 2023 campaign and his recent conviction for money laundering, where he opted for a fine to avoid imprisonment.
The 70-year-old politician acknowledged the Labour Party’s role in the 2023 Presidential Elections but highlighted the need for him to align with his political beliefs in liberalism, sincerity, and freedom. Okupe’s resignation poses challenges for the Obi campaign, known for its focus on accountability, requiring the appointment of a new Campaign Director General to navigate the campaign seamlessly.
As a seasoned politician and former spokesperson for the National Republican Convention, Okupe’s departure marks a significant development in Nigerian political circles.
Political pundits have already began to wonder if Okupe is about to defect to another party.
