The Edo State Government has issued a stern rebuttal to recent claims of looting involving bags of rice from an unidentified truck and private residences in Benin City.
This follows the circulation of videos purportedly showing the incidents, which have sparked concerns in the wake of the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests.
The videos, reportedly originating from the Urora axis of Ikpoba Hill, have been met with skepticism as the government clarifies that it does not operate any warehouse in that area.
In a statement released to Truth Live News on Monday by Hon. Chris Osa Nehikhare, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, the state government emphasized that relief materials are distributed through religious organizations, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, and the Edo State Muslims Pilgrim Welfare Board.
“The Edo State Government does not store or distribute relief materials directly. Instead, we collaborate with these established religious bodies to assist the vulnerable,” Nehikhare stated. He also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of disseminating false content aimed at creating disorder and discrediting the government.
In response to the unrest, the government has urged the public to disregard the misleading videos and has called on protesters to conduct their demonstrations peacefully and without vandalism.
“The APC’s actions are not only condemnable but also detrimental to the peaceful process of advocacy,” Nehikhare added. “We urge all involved to focus on constructive dialogue and avoid engaging in destructive behaviors.”
