Abuja, Nigeria
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in honor of the elder statesman and former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd).
Truth Live News gathered that this landmark decision was announced on Monday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following FEC’s final meeting for 2024 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to Idris, the renaming reflects the government’s commitment to celebrating national unity and recognizing the contributions of distinguished Nigerians. “The Federal Executive Council has taken the decision to rename the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University to honor this elder statesman,” he stated, adding that the legislative process for formalizing this will soon begin at the National Assembly.
This move goes to show the Tinubu administration’s inclusive approach to governance, which seeks to preserve Nigeria’s history while fostering unity across all regions. By celebrating a figure like General Gowon, a former head of state who played a pivotal role in the nation’s post-war reconciliation, the government highlights the enduring importance of national harmony and leadership.
