Namibian President Hage Geingob, aged 82, has passed away, less than three weeks after it was disclosed that he would undergo cancer treatment.
Truth Live News gathered that the government urged the nation to remain calm while they address state arrangements.
Last month, Geingob’s office revealed he had started treatment for “cancerous cells” detected during a routine colonoscopy and gastroscopy, without specifying details about his diagnosis. Despite the health challenges, he continued performing presidential duties.
Geingob planned to travel to the United States for medical care, with the intention to return to Namibia on February 2. His health struggles predated his presidency, having undergone brain surgery in 2013 and survived prostate cancer in the following year.
Geingob’s death occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning at Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek, with his wife and children by his side.
Acting president Nangolo Mbumba expressed the nation’s loss, describing Geingob as a “distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution, and the pillar of the Namibian house.”
The announcement did not delve into the specifics of his diagnosis or prognosis.
His contributions include his role as an anti-apartheid activist-turned-politician, and his impact on the nation’s constitution. The details surrounding his health and the circumstances leading to his death remain focal points in the aftermath of this loss.
The nation has been thrown into mourning following his passing.
