Abuja, Nigeria
In a significant move, Nigeria’s House of Representatives has just passed a bill advocating for the reinstatement of the old National Anthem. Sponsored by Hon Julius Ihonvbere, the bill received overwhelming support during today’s plenary session in Abuja.
Truth Live News gathered that the proposed change has sparked diverse reactions among citizens. While some question its priority amidst pressing national issues, others view it as a symbolic step towards reclaiming the nation’s identity.
The former anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” which resonated prior to 1978, is poised to replace the current anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots.” However, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda raised concerns about the colonial connotations associated with the old anthem, highlighting the historical context behind the adoption of the current one.
The wordings were
⁃ Nigeria, we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand, Nigerians all, and proud to serve Our own dear native land.
-Our flag shall be a symbol That truth and justice reign, In peace or battle honourd And this we count as gain, To hand on to our children A banner without stain.
⁃ Oh, God of all creation,
Grant this our one request, Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed, And so with peace and plenty, Nigeria may.-be blessed,
The restored anthem echoes themes of unity, justice, and prosperity, embodying the aspirations of a nation striving for a better future. Its invocation of divine assistance in nation-building underscores the collective desire for progress and well-being for all Nigerians.
