The Supreme Court of Nigeria has officially declared Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the duly elected Governor of Lagos State.
The apex court’s ruling comes after a protracted legal battle that saw various levels of the judiciary scrutinize the electoral process.
The unanimous decision by the Supreme Court Justices reaffirms the victory of Governor Sanwo-Olu in the gubernatorial election held February 2023.
The legal contest, initiated by the opposing candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-vivour of Labour Party, centered on allegations of irregularities and electoral malpractices during the polling exercise.
Justice Garba Lawal who read the lead judgment dismissed the appeal filed by Mr Rhodes-Vivour.
He held that the deputy governor was duly qualified to contest the election.
The apex court, in delivering its judgment, underscored the importance of upholding the democratic process and ensuring that the will of the people prevails. The Justices meticulously reviewed the evidence presented by both parties and found no substantial grounds to overturn the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
