Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Etsako Federal Constituency, Edo State, have taken to the streets to protest against the recent defection of Philip Shaibu, former Deputy Governor of Edo State, from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
The uproar follows Shaibu’s impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly on Monday, citing serious allegations of perjury and divulging sensitive government information. Shaibu’s removal from office paved the way for Omobayo Godwins to assume the position of Deputy Governor.
Rumors have circulated that Shaibu, in light of his recent political setback, is seeking a “safe landing” by abandoning the PDP and joining the ranks of the APC. However, this move has sparked indignation among APC loyalists in Etsako Federal Constituency, who perceive Shaibu’s entry into their party as unwelcome and contentious.
The protest, marked by placards bearing slogans denouncing Shaibu’s defection, underscores the deep-seated disapproval within the APC ranks towards his inclusion. Many protesters argue that Shaibu’s tarnished reputation, stemming from the impeachment proceedings and the allegations leveled against him, is not in alignment with the values and principles of the APC.
Speaking to reporters, some protesters expressed concerns over the potential repercussions of Shaibu’s defection, fearing that it could undermine the party’s integrity and erode public trust. They emphasized the need for the APC to uphold its standards of accountability and transparency, urging party leaders to reconsider their acceptance of Shaibu into their fold.
