In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision on the 2023 Kogi gubernatorial election, Austin Abu Achimugu, the 2023 gubernatorial candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has expressed profound gratitude to the people of Kogi State, particularly his fellow Igala brothers and sisters.
In an emotionally charged statement made available to Truth Live News, Achimugu praised their unwavering loyalty and dedication in supporting the candidacy of Muritala Ajaka, The Runner up SDP gubernatorial candidate, throughout the election and even in the face of the unfavorable ruling by the Supreme Court.
Although the judgment was based on technicalities rather than the substance of the case, Achimugu highlighted the collective resilience of the Igala people, which, according to him, demonstrates their deep sense of commitment to the future of Kogi State.
“Your unwavering support throughout this journey, especially after the outcome of the elections, is not just a reflection of your political choice but an emblem of your unbroken spirit. It is this strength and determination that defines the Igala people. Despite the fact that the Supreme Court’s decision was not based on the merits of the case but on technical grounds, your resolve remains a powerful reminder that the Igala people are steadfast in their commitment to a better Kogi State. You have shown time and again that we are not mere observers in the political process of our state but active stakeholders who are invested in shaping its future,” Achimugu remarked.
He further encouraged the people of Kogi State to shift their gaze to the future with optimism. While acknowledging the disappointment felt by many, he urged the people to embrace the reality of the situation and focus on the work that lies ahead. In extending his congratulations to Governor Usman Ododo, Achimugu stressed the importance of humility in leadership, pointing out that political power is divinely bestowed and should be exercised with fairness and inclusivity.
“I take this moment to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Governor Usman Ododo on his victory. As we all know, power is given by God, and it is not for us to question His will. However, the responsibility now lies in the hands of the newly elected governor to ensure that his leadership is one that transcends all divides. It is crucial that he governs with the interests of all Kogites in mind—irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation. The election period is over, and now is the time to focus on delivering genuine governance—one that is transparent, thorough, and most importantly, centered on the needs of the people.”
Achimugu’s message carried a tone of reconciliation and urged the governor to prioritize unity. He warned against any form of divisiveness that could further fragment the state’s diverse population. “Now is not the time to gloat or to deepen the wounds caused by political competition. Instead, it is a time to mend fences and build bridges. As leaders, we must focus on healing the state, bringing people together, and ensuring that no one is left behind in the process of governance.”
In a solemn reflection, Achimugu extended his condolences to the families who suffered loss or hardship during the electoral process, paying tribute to those who lost their lives. “My heart is with the families who endured unimaginable pain and suffering during this election. To those who lost their lives, their livelihoods, or faced severe hardship, I offer my deepest sympathies. These sacrifices were not made in vain. We will honor their memories by standing firm in the pursuit of justice, fairness, and the overall well-being of all Kogites. May their families find the strength to endure, and may their sacrifices inspire us to continue striving for a better and more just Kogi State.”
As Kogi State enters a new phase, Achimugu promised to remain committed to his advocacy for justice and good governance. He assured the people that his role as a voice for the masses would not waver, even as the state moves forward under a new administration. “I want to make it clear to all Kogites that my doors remain wide open, as they always have been. I will continue to be a strong voice on the issues that matter to you, offering credible opposition when necessary and holding the government accountable to its promises. The work of building a better Kogi State is far from over, and together, we will continue to push for a state where every citizen can thrive under leadership that is truly inclusive.”
Finally, Achimugu called on the Igala people to unite with other ethnic groups across the state to foster a spirit of collaboration. He emphasized the role of the Igala Kingdom in shaping the future of Kogi State and urged everyone to put aside the divisions of the past for the sake of progress. “The Igala people have always played a central role in the development of our state, and that role will continue to be significant. However, we must also recognize the importance of working hand-in-hand with all the other ethnic groups in Kogi to build a state that we can all be proud of. Let us put our past divisions behind us and focus on what truly matters—a prosperous and united Kogi State where every citizen benefits from good governance and shared progress. Together, we can build a future that is brighter for all.”
Achimugu’s message resonated deeply with the people of Kogi State, particularly within the Igala community, who continue to stand firm in their desire for a more just and equitable state under new leadership.
