Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has said that despite being minority in the house of assembly, his government plans to thrive by doing the right thing.
Obi who made his plan known while fielding questions in Chatham House, UK on Monday pledged to shun nepotism and work by Nigeria’s constitution.
Asked how his government if elected intends to work with legislators to ensure the reforms he is proposing come to light given the complexity of Nigeria’s democracy and the Labour party not projected to have majority in the house of assembly Obi said, “quite frankly quite frankly, I’ve been through this as a governor. When I was elected and sworn in as the governor, I had 30 house members not from my party.”
“Infact nobody from my party was involved but as long as you are pursuing what is right everybody will go with you because the legislator is insecure in his place. He knows that his people are without jobs and that is what he wants. He wants development, what else is he elected to do?”
“It becomes a problem when you are pursuing transactional policies or you are engaging in nepotism, but if you address it by simply following the constitution which spells out that the system is characterized by simply that we have diversity and all is inputed and you did the right thing, you don’t need to worry about that.”
On insecurity in the country and especially the activities of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), Obi condemned the activities of the agitators.”
He said, “I spoke yesterday about Biafra being ended 63 years ago. I condemn all agitators but in condemning them you have to look at what brought about the agitations all over the place.”
