China will meet with the United Nations Security Council next week to discuss the United States’ imposition of additional tariffs, escalating the ongoing trade war between the two nations.
The US tariffs on Chinese imports can be as high as 245% following President Donald Trump’s order, prompting Chinese companies like Shein and Temu to issue statements informing customers of potential price adjustments.
The White House maintained that China is responsible for the extraordinary tariff hike due to Beijing’s decision to double down after Trump’s initial directive.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has accused the US of disregarding the balance of interests reached through multilateral trade negotiation and abusing tariffs under the pretext of seeking reciprocity and fairness.
The spokesperson, Lin Jian, stated that the US action deals a heavy blow to the global economic order and the multilateral trading system, undermining the interests and well-being of all countries.
China’s meeting with the UN Security Council seeks to help the body gain a deeper understanding of the harms of unilateralism and bullying acts, and reaffirm its commitment to multilateralism.
The Chinese government stressed that the US actions have brought unprecedented difficulties and challenges to the United Nations and the cause of multilateralism.
