UYO: The citizens of Akwa Ibom State have reacted to the dissolution of the Hotels Management and Tourism Board by the state government.
Many citizens expressed that Governor Umo Bassey Eno ought to have dissolved his cabinet before considering the dissolution of the Hotels Management and Tourism Board.
This follows the Governor’s announcement of the termination of the Board after the 32-day 2024 Christmas Unplugged in Uyo, the state capital.
A statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, quoted the Governor as saying, “This is in line with the state government’s determination to reposition the state’s tourism sector to align with the ARISE agenda of the present administration.”
Dated January 3, 2025, with reference number SSG/AKS/18/Vol.I/60, the Governor approved the dissolution of the Hotels Management and Tourism Board with effect from January 2, 2025.
“To this end, the Chairman of the Board is hereby directed to hand over to the most senior director in the board, who will work strictly under the supervision of the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism until further notice,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, in a social media post, followers of the Chief Press Secretary, Ekerette Udoh, also called for the dissolution of the Governor’s cabinet.
Etido Useh said, “Tell the Governor to dissolve his cabinet. It’s long overdue.”
Effiong Mbom added, “Akwa Ibom State has the potential to be a top destination for vacation tourism in Africa. Tourism in Africa is a major source of revenue for sub-nationals who can fully exploit its potential.
“Akwa Ibom State, with all its assets and potential, should be one of the most visited places in Africa. Realizing this goal should be at the core of a board like this, whose job is to use the semblance of peace and other tourism assets in Akwa Ibom State to position the state as one of the richest sub-nationals in Africa through tourism.”
He urged the Governor to recruit and assemble a competent team capable of unlocking the state’stourism potential.
