In a tragic case of mob justice in Uromi, Edo State, seven Northern travelers, mistaken for bandits, were lynched and set ablaze by an irate crowd.
This corrects an earlier report from our media firm, Truth Live News, which inaccurately stated that 16 individuals were killed. We regret the error and are committed to providing accurate updates as we receive them.
The incident occurred when a local vigilante group intercepted a vehicle transporting the travelers from Port Harcourt to Kano for the upcoming Sallah celebration. Upon discovering machetes and locally made firearms (dane guns) in their possession, alarm spread through the community, sparking suspicions that the travelers were kidnappers.
This unfortunate incident can be attributed to the failure of the Edo State government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo, to ensure the safety of Uromi residents. In recent times, bandits, kidnappers, and other dangerous gunmen have turned the once-peaceful community into a den of terror and insecurity.
Eyewitnesses reported that a frenzy erupted as enraged youths swarmed the scene, ignoring the Hausa men’s desperate pleas of innocence. “They were begging, saying they were only traveling for Sallah, but nobody listened,” a distraught onlooker recounted. “One of them was even pushed in a wheelbarrow straight into the flames.”
By the time security operatives arrived, seven of the travelers had been killed and set ablaze.
We apologize for the initial inaccuracy and are working to verify further details surrounding this horrific event.
