Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare has called for a full scale investigation into allegations of brutality, extortion and torture by his men on students of Akwa Ibom state Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua.
Recall that the students had staged a peaceful protest against the police for incessant torture, brutality and extortion of their colleagues before the police Commissioner, Baba Azare stepped into the matter and invited them to a meeting at the police command Ikot Akpan Abia , Uyo .
According to sources at the meeting who do not want their names in the media, said that the Student Union Government (SUG) leaders were accompanied by the Rector of the Polytechnic, Moses Umobong and Dean, students Affairs, Emmanuel Umoh to meet with police authorities to find lasting solution to the students face off with the police in the state.
A statement by the Police image maker for Akwa Ibom State, DSP Timfon John and made available to Journalists in Uyo, said that CP has ordered comprehensive investigation into the police brutality.
“The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into allegations of police brutality and extortion raised by students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua.
“In a bid to address their concerns, the CP engaged the management of the school, Students’ Union Government (SUG) and other representatives in a peaceful dialogue aimed at fostering understanding and strengthening police-student relations”, the statement said.
John emphasized that during the meeting the command reaffirmed its uncompromising dedication to upholding human rights and ensuring the safety of all citizens, including students.
“The CP strongly condemned any acts of misconduct by police officers, emphasizing that any personnel found guilty of unprofessional behaviour would face disciplinary measures in accordance with the law.
“In the same vein, the command reassured students that proactive security measures were already in place to curb crime and enhance safety within the host community through intelligence-led operations.
“The CP used the occasion to emphasize the need for continuous collaboration between students and law enforcement agencies, encouraging open communication and trust-building efforts to ensure a more secure environment.”
