Denmark’s King Frederik has postponed his visit to Greenland by one day due to stormy weather, amid US President Donald Trump’s interest in taking over the Arctic island.
The king’s visit aims to underscore unity with the Danish territory in response to Trump’s repeated assertions that Greenland should become part of the United States.
King Frederik serves as Denmark’s symbolic head of state and does not hold formal political powers, but his visit is a significant demonstration of Danish historical unity with semi-autonomous Greenland.
It will be recalled that the visit comes months after Greenland’s then-premier accused Denmark of historical “genocide” and stepped up a push for independence.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen have affirmed their alliance, emphasizing their commitment to unity.
Truth live news reports that the Danish royal family traditionally makes annual visits to the island, and king Frederik has spent extended periods of time there, including on a four-month expedition.
Greenland, a Danish colony until 1953, officially became part of the Denmark that year.
