The Department of State Services (DSS) has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to reconsider its nationwide protest plans.
NLC announced a two-day mass protest for February 27 and 28, 2024, citing economic hardships facing Nigerians.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Peter Afunanya, DSS Director of Communications, acknowledged the NLC’s right to protest but urged them to postpone the demonstration for the sake of peace and public order.
Afunanya expressed concern that certain elements might exploit the protest to incite crisis and escalate violence, worsening the socio-economic situation nationwide.
He emphasized the importance of dialogue and negotiation over actions that could escalate tensions, noting that government at all levels is working to address the current challenges.
Afunanya cited the timeless wisdom of the poet JP Clark, warning against the dangers of escalated conflicts and urging everyone to prioritize peace and unity.
He further urged parents, political parties, religious and traditional leaders, civil society organizations, and others to discourage violence and demonstrate leadership during these trying times.
“Making political capital out of the current situation or involving in divisive utterances at a time like this, will be of no benefit to any peace-loving Nigerian.
“Citizens are advised to be vigilant and not allow fifth columnists and hostile forces or agents to use them to destabilise the peace of the nation.
“The DSS stands opposed to violence as a means of settling our present day challenges, be they economic, political or otherwise
“Accordingly, the Service will work with sister security and law enforcement agencies to ensure that lasting peace is maintained in the country,” the statement read.
