The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has urged Senegal to swiftly address election delays and establish a new date for the presidential poll. The call follows President Macky Sall’s decision to indefinitely postpone the election, citing controversies among the 20 candidates vying for his position.

In an official statement released on Saturday duly monitored by Truth Live News, ECOWAS expressed concern about the circumstances leading to the delay, emphasizing the need for “transparent, inclusive, and credible elections.” The Commission urged authorities to expedite processes and set a new election date while calling on all stakeholders to engage in dialogue.

“The ECOWAS Commission expresses concern over the circumstances that led to the postponement of the elections and appeals to the competent authorities to expedite the various processes in order to set a new date for the elections,” the statement reads.

ECOWAS encouraged the political class to prioritize dialogue and collaboration, emphasizing the importance of transparent, inclusive, and credible elections. Commending President Macky Sall’s decision not to seek another term, ECOWAS praised him for upholding Senegal’s democratic tradition and urged him to continue defending it.

The statement concluded with ECOWAS committing to closely monitor the situation in Senegal. The international community awaits prompt actions from Senegal to ensure a timely and transparent electoral process.

Amidst this, netizens highlight concerns, noting that this dilemma contrasts with ECOWAS member countries that have disrupted democracy. Allowing this trend to continue may undermine democratic gains.
