Edo Govt Extends Sympathy to Residents Amidst Severe Flash Floods in Benin City

Ismail Abdulazeez Mantu Reporting

Edo State, Nigeria

In the wake of the intense flash floods that swept across Benin City on Friday, May 24, 2024, the Edo State Government has expressed heartfelt sympathy to all affected residents.

The devastating flooding, triggered by an incessant downpour lasting over 15 hours, has left significant parts of the city inundated, causing distress and disruption to daily life.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had issued warnings several weeks ago, predicting heavy flooding due to torrential rains. The Edo State Government took these alerts seriously, implementing a series of proactive measures aimed at mitigating the potential impact of the floods. This included extensive work on the State’s flood management infrastructure, such as the maintenance and enhancement of retention ponds, and the clearing of drains and flood pathways across various flood-prone and low-lying areas.

Despite these efforts, the unprecedented volume of rainfall on May 24 exceeded the capacity of these preventative measures, leading to the overflow of flood retention systems and severe flooding in multiple locations.

Governor Godwin Obaseki has commended the prompt response of emergency services and assured residents that the government is committed to providing all necessary support to those affected. He emphasized that the safety and well-being of Edo State’s citizens remain a top priority.

The government has called on all residents to stay vigilant and adhere to safety advisories issued by emergency services. Relief efforts are underway, and the government is coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure that aid reaches those in need as quickly as possible.

The Edo State Government reiterates its dedication to improving flood management strategies and infrastructure to better handle such natural disasters in the future, thereby safeguarding the lives and properties of its citizens.
