Edo Govt Slams Shaibu for Unauthorized Visit to Radisson Hotel Site

Toba Owojaiye reporting
Benin City, Edo State

Tensions continue to rise in Edo State as the government condemned an unauthorized visit by the impeached deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, to the construction site of the Radisson Hotel in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Benin City. The visit, described by state officials as a “significant breach of privacy,” has sparked concerns within the private sector.

The Radisson Hotel Project is being executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), with private sector investors holding the majority equity. According to the Edo State Government, Shaibu’s visit constitutes an infringement on the private rights of these investors. The government has hinted that the investors are well within their rights to pursue legal action against Shaibu for trespassing and violating their private space.

A press release, made available to Truth Live News, from the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, emphasized the severity of the issue.

“The Edo State Government condemns the unauthorized visit of Philip Shaibu to the construction site. The investors have the right to pursue legal redress against this infringement on their privacy,” Nehikhare stated.

In response to Shaibu’s actions, the government stressed the importance of respecting the law, especially in business environments where private investments play a significant role. They also questioned Shaibu’s understanding of the potential legal risks, given his limited experience in the private sector.

Nehikhare added, “Philip Shaibu must recognize that, as a private citizen, he must conduct himself in a manner that respects the privacy and rights of others, especially within the framework of the law.”

Additionally, Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser on Media Projects to the Edo State Government, warned that Shaibu’s actions could disrupt governance. Osagie reminded Shaibu that he is now a private citizen and urged him to “subject himself to the authority of the law.” He further emphasized that Shaibu should await the outcome of the legal proceedings at the Appeal Court rather than disrupt ongoing government projects.

In the wake of this controversy, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a conducive environment for businesses and investments to thrive. Nehikhare assured investors that the government will provide the necessary support for any who feel their rights or privacy have been violated. “Our government is dedicated to protecting businesses and investments in Edo State. We will support investors whose rights have been infringed upon, reinforcing confidence that their interests are secure under the law,” he said.

The government has called on the private sector to disregard Shaibu’s actions and have faith in the state’s legal framework, ensuring that their investments are safe and protected. The administration also reassured the people of Edo State that it will continue to uphold the rule of law and protect both lives and property.

The ongoing political tussle between the impeached deputy governor and the Edo State Government has further complicated governance, with the public anxiously awaiting the next legal steps.
