In a huge blow to the aspirations of Senator Monday Okpebholo, the flagbearer for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming Edo State Governorship Elections, his stronghold in Esan Central Local Government Area (LGA) has been rocked by a massive exodus of party faithfuls defecting to the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Hundreds of disillusioned APC members, including several from Okpebholo’s own Uwessan Ward II, have made the decisive switch, citing a litany of grievances against the incumbent senator. Central to their discontent is the perceived failure of Okpebholo to address the pressing needs of his constituents, particularly in his own village of Uwessan, which suffers from a dire lack of access roads.

The defectors lamented the stark contrast between Okpebholo’s neglect of Uwessan and the tangible progress achieved under the leadership of Governor Obaseki, notably the much-needed road infrastructure developments connecting neighboring areas. They accused Okpebholo of prioritizing personal interests, highlighted by the construction of his own residence in Irrua, a move seen as emblematic of his detachment from the plight of his constituents.

Further increasing the disillusionment was the alleged misappropriation of substantial funds earmarked for constituency projects, with an estimated N650 Million Naira reportedly diverted without yielding any discernible benefits for the populace. Such allegations have fueled widespread condemnation and eroded trust in Okpebholo’s ability to deliver on his promises as a representative.

Amidst the defections, voices among the disenchanted electorate urged Okpebholo to reconsider his gubernatorial ambitions and instead refocus his efforts on fulfilling his duties as a senator, advocating for the genuine advancement of his constituents’ welfare over personal political pursuits.
