The Edo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo, accusing it of failing to protect the lives and property of citizens.

In a state-of-the-state address, the PDP condemned the rising wave of violence, citing the recent killings of at least 35 residents, including Batemue Philip Ebo, Christopher Bello, and Victor Ogedengbe, who were reportedly murdered by militant groups and criminal elements. The party also decried widespread destruction of property and injuries suffered by several other residents.

According to Chairman, Edo State PDP Caretaker Committee, Anthony Aziegbemi, “The people of Edo State are under siege,” the PDP declared, referencing remarks made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a key political ally of Okpebholo, who recently lamented the deteriorating security situation in the state during a Senate session in Abuja.

The party further alleged that Edo, once regarded as one of Nigeria’s safest states under former Governor Godwin Obaseki, has now become a hub for kidnappings and violent crimes, with criminals operating unchecked.

Questioning the governor’s handling of security, the PDP asked why Okpebholo had failed to maintain the surveillance and security infrastructure put in place by his predecessor, including a command and control center and a statewide security network. The party also accused the governor of dismantling existing security structures without implementing viable alternatives.

“How many Security Council meetings has Okpebholo held since assuming office, and what has been the outcome of those meetings, if any?” the PDP queried.

The statement underscores growing concerns over insecurity in Edo State and adds to mounting pressure on the Okpebholo administration to take decisive action to curb the rising violence.
