The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the recent suspension of the 18 Local Government Area (LGA) Chairmen by the Edo State House of Assembly.
The action, reportedly directed by Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, was described as unconstitutional, null, and void.
In a statement released by the party, the PDP criticized the decision as a blatant disregard of a recent ruling by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, and the Supreme Court’s decision.
The ruling, stemming from a suit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, had reaffirmed the autonomy and independence of local governments, as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“How can a governor direct the State Assembly to suspend democratically elected chairmen for insubordination?” the statement queried.
The PDP emphasized that the Chairmen enjoy constitutional autonomy and are not subordinates of the Governor or the Assembly.
It further accused the State Assembly of ignoring due process, claiming the suspended Chairmen and their deputies were denied an opportunity to defend themselves against what it described as “trumped-up charges.”
The PDP reaffirmed its stance on upholding the supremacy of the Constitution, warning that any attempt to undermine its provisions or disregard judicial rulings constitutes an attack on democracy and the rule of law.
It called on the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and its members to immediately reverse the suspension, warning that failure to do so undermines democratic governance.
