The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has applauded the recent High Court ruling reinstating the chairmen and vice chairmen of the 18 local government areas in the state. The judgment, delivered in Benin City, nullified their suspension by the Edo State House of Assembly, which the court deemed illegal and unconstitutional. The suspension was reportedly orchestrated at the behest of the Governor, Monday Okpebholo.
In its ruling, the court directed the Edo State Government, Governor-elect, and the Attorney General not to implement the suspension resolution passed by the House of Assembly. The PDP, in a press release signed by its chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, described the judgment as a significant victory for democracy, the rule of law, and the people of Edo State.
Dr. Aziegbemi noted that the decision reinforces the judiciary’s role as the last hope for justice, particularly during ongoing tribunal proceedings related to the 2024 governorship election. He urged local government officials to resume their duties and continue contributing to grassroots development and impactful governance.
The PDP also called on security agencies to ensure the safety of reinstated council officials, enabling them to perform their constitutional responsibilities without hindrance. The party reaffirmed its commitment to reclaiming its mandate and safeguarding democratic principles in Edo State.
