Benin City, Edo State

In a recent press release, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has fiercely criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for engaging in what it describes as “campaigns of calumny and mudslinging.” Chris Nehikhare, Commissioner of Communication, condemned the APC for spreading falsehoods and diverting attention from substantive political issues.

Nehikhare stated, “The APC is reeling from the fact that they have a candidate who has continued to inflict the party and its handlers with the pain of making up stories to confuse Edo people and distract them from the main issue, which is selling their vision and plans to the people of the State.” He noted that despite issuing over 150 press statements in the past three months, none have addressed the party’s vision or plans for Edo State.

Highlighting the PDP’s accomplishments under Governor Godwin Obaseki, Nehikhare emphasized the state’s commitment to supporting its residents amid economic challenges. “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Government in Edo State, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, commits one billion monthly to provide food palliative to millions of residents,” Nehikhare pointed out. This initiative aims to alleviate the suffering caused by what the PDP describes as the “gross mismanagement of the economy” by the APC-led Federal Government.

Truth Live News gathered that the Commissioner also highlighted its leadership in raising the minimum wage to N70,000 and pledged further increases. Nehikhare challenged the APC to clarify its stance on this issue, stating, “We want to hear from the APC and its candidate what their plan is in this regard. Are they going to increase or reduce the minimum wage?”

Additionally, Nehikhare noted the state’s provision of free bus rides for Edo residents since September 2023, a response to the removal of the fuel subsidy by the APC-led Federal Government. This program has benefitted over six million residents. “We want to hear the plans of the APC and their mute candidate. Are they going to scrap or sustain the programme?” he questioned.

The PDP also pointed out the state’s employment achievements, with over 5000 people employed in the last five years. The party is keen to understand the APC’s employment strategy and its feasibility in paying the N70,000 minimum wage. Furthermore, Nehikhare highlighted the timely payment of salaries and pensions by the Obaseki-led government, contrasting it with previous administrations where pensioners protested for their entitlements.

Criticizing the APC candidate, Monday Okpebholo, Nehikhare remarked, “Edo people are wise and can’t be deceived by the diversionary tactics of the APC. They are interested in the candidate and want to hear him canvass his vision for the State.” He added, “No candidate in the history of Edo State has had over 300 spokespersons and says nothing by himself. It is quite embarrassing and speaks to the quality of the person of Monday Okpebholo.”

The press release also addressed accusations against Governor Obaseki, highlighting the irony of APC members wielding sophisticated weapons and breaching public peace without repercussions. Nehikhare emphasized the recognition of Edo State’s achievements by various global organizations, contrasting this with the APC’s alleged self-interest.

“Edo people know better and come September 21, they will speak with one voice and the APC will be reminded, once again, that elections are not won by lies and alternative facts,” Nehikhare concluded.
