The Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa (GGEJA) has urged the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to immediately redeploy the Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Anuhbum Onuoha, ahead of the September 21 governorship election in the state.

In a statement made available to Truth Live News, the group alleged that Dr Onuoha is a card-carrying member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State and loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike.

According to the group’s Country Director, Mr. John Mayaki, Dr Onuoha’s affiliations and backgrounds have raised concerns about his possible biases and conflicts of interest in the upcoming election.

The Coalition argued that Dr Onuoha’s past records and political affiliations have compromised his integrity and ability to conduct a credible election. The group stated that the people of Edo State cannot accept any electoral process with Dr. Anugbum Onuoha as REC and demanded his redeployment out of Edo State to restore confidence in the electoral process.

The group reiterated its demand for Dr. Anugbum Onuoha’s redeployment to ensure the integrity of the electoral process, emphasising that the integrity of an election relies on the confidence of the electorate in the electoral process.

This development comes as the Edo State governorship election approaches, with concerns about the credibility of the electoral process mounting. The Coalition’s call for Dr Onuoha’s removal has added to the growing debate about the need for impartial electoral officials to ensure a free and fair election.
