The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has distanced itself from a circulating list of governors under investigation, which has been reported by various media outlets.
This list allegedly contains details indicating that a significant number of former governors have been probed since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999, including prominent names like Orji Uzor Kalu, Joshua Dariye, and James Ibori.
However, the EFCC, in a press statement through its spokesman Dele Oyewale, clarified that it has not released any such list.
The Commission emphasized that it has neither issued nor discussed the investigation of ex-governors with any media outlet. It described the reported list as false and malicious, stating that it is a fabricated creation with unknown motives.
“The report headlined: “EFCC Releases Full List of 58 Ex- Governors that Embezzled N2 .187 Trillion”, in one of the news outlets, is false and mischievous as the Commission neither issued the said list nor entertained discussions on investigation of ex-governors with any news medium.
“This invariably means that the so-called list is a disingenuous fabrication designed to achieve motives known only to the authors.”
The EFCC urged the public to disregard the circulating report, emphasizing its falsehood and misleading nature.
Oyewale also advised the media to verify information related to ongoing investigations directly with the Commission to prevent the spread of inaccurate reports.
