Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, has pleaded for mercy on behalf of Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy senator who was convicted of organ trafficking in the UK.

After a lengthy trial at the Old Bailey, Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, along with a doctor, Dr. Obinna Obeta, were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a 21-year-old Lagos resident to Britain with the intent to exploit him for his kidney.

Prior to the trio’s sentencing, Obasanjo wrote to the Chief Clerk of The Central Criminal Court Old Bailey, London, on April 3, 2023, saying that Sonia’s urgent medical need should prompt the United Kingdom to temper justice with mercy.
