Peter Mbah, the governor of Enugu, has announced the approval of a new minimum wage of N80,000 for state workers, effective from October 2024.

The announcement was made in a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday.

“I have just approved a minimum wage of N80,000 for Enugu workers, effective October 2024,” the governor’s post read. He expressed his appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the state’s workforce and reaffirmed his commitment to improving their welfare in line with his campaign promises, saying, “Tomorrow is here.”

This decision follows similar moves by other state governors. Just 24 hours earlier, Umo Eno, governor of Akwa Ibom, had announced the same minimum wage for civil servants in his state. On October 16, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, increased the minimum wage to N85,000, while Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, followed suit on October 18, also setting the new minimum wage at N85,000.

The wage increases come after President Bola Tinubu signed a new minimum wage bill into law in July, raising the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000.
