Far-Right Outsider Javier Milei Shocks Argentina, Secures Presidential Victory in Upset Win

Javier Milei, an outsider associated with the far-right libertarian ideology, have clinched Argentina’s presidential run-off, as indicated by preliminary results.

His opponent, economy minister Sergio Massa, conceded defeat. Even former US President Donald Trump congratulated Mr Milei on his victory, saying he would “Make Argentina Great Again!”.

This election arrives during a challenging period for Argentina, marked by escalating inflation and a deeply troubled economy.

Milei’s radical proposals, including the abolishment of the central bank, resonated with voters seeking substantial change.

Despite defying poll predictions, Milei secured a decisive victory over the governing Peronist candidate, leading by over 10 points in provisional results.

Milei, speaking to his supporters in Buenos Aires, pledged a new beginning for Argentina, signaling an end to the country’s decline.

He vowed to position Argentina back on the global stage, aligning with the free world to foster a better future.

After his defeat, Mr Massa said: “Obviously the results are not what we expected. I have contacted Javier Milei to congratulate him,.

“From tomorrow the responsibility of providing certainty belongs to Milei.”

This victory for Milei, often likened to Trump and Brazil’s Bolsonaro, reflects the populace’s discontent with traditional politics and economic turmoil.

Amid annual inflation surpassing 140% and significant poverty rates, the win signifies a bold step by Argentinians toward embracing change in hopes of improving their livelihoods.

Milei’s untested strategies, including advocating for the US dollar as the official currency, have garnered mixed reactions, with some economists expressing concerns about potential financial turmoil.
