In an unprecedented move to enhance the judicial landscape, FCT Minister, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, announced a comprehensive plan aimed at bolstering court facilities and improving the welfare of judges in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2023 All Nigeria Judges’ Conference, Barr. Wike reiterated the FCT Administration’s commitment to creating an environment conducive to the effective dispensation of justice. He emphasized alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, ensuring the judiciary operates without fear or favor.

President Tinubu’s directive to establish a new Court of Appeal division for the FCT within the next 15 months is a pivotal aspect of this initiative. Additionally, plans are underway for the construction of residences for High and Magistrate court judges, further affirming the commitment to a well-equipped and supported judiciary.

Barr. Wike stated, “We are committed to fostering an environment that supports the judiciary in dispensing justice without fear and favour.” He highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance court facilities and the welfare of judicial officers.

Commending the National Judicial Institute (NJI) for providing a vital platform for judges to exchange ideas, Barr. Wike acknowledged the significance of continuous education to keep judges abreast of the latest developments in jurisprudence.

Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, emphasized the strategic importance of the conference for stock-taking and visioning. He urged judges to uphold excellence in their duties, emphasizing that justice should not only be done but must be seen to be done.

Representing President Tinubu at the event, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, commended the evolution of the Nigeria Judiciary and called on judicial officers to maintain high standards.

The conference, themed “Strengthening Judicial Commitments to the Rule of Law and Democracy,” attracted a diverse audience, including judges from superior courts, judicial officers, lawmakers, ministers, heads of security agencies, and members of the diplomatic community. This gathering provided a platform for participants to stay informed on evolving legal issues, share best practices, and collectively strategize to enhance the administration of justice in Nigeria.
