President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has restated his administration’s dedication to bolstering Nigeria’s energy and power industry, aligning with his promise to elevate power generation beyond the existing 12,000MW.

The President made these remarks during the inauguration of the first phase of the 1350MW Gwagwalada Independent Power Project (GIPP) undertaken by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in collaboration with China Machinery and Engineering Corporation (CMEC) and General Electric (GE).

The project aims to resolve challenges in the power value chain and eliminate distribution bottlenecks, in line with President Tinubu’s campaign agenda.

The Gwagwalada Independent Power Project (GIPP), situated on a 54.7-hectare land in Abuja, is a significant power generation endeavor linked to the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline corridor, which is currently 70% complete.

The project is led by NNPC Ltd. in conjunction with CMEC for engineering, procurement, and construction, while GE is responsible for the Long Term Service Agreement. Its purpose is to ensure a stable electricity supply, fortify Nigeria’s energy sector, and accelerate economic progress.
