Fire outbreak has destroyed property worth millions of Naira in the University of Calabar, Calabar, Cross River State, on Thursday.

Although, a statement from the Public Relations Unit of the University on Friday said “the specific cause and financial cost of the damage by the fire, are not certain.

Meanwhile, the fire which gutted the Registry Unit, the major storeroom with Furniture, Cleaning materials, Stationery, and other unidentified items took place at about 8:30pm.

In fact, as at the time of the fire outbreak, “no fire service men were in sight, Students and Staff demonstrated rare courage to prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings,” report said.

Accordingly, the “Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, in the statement responded to the distress call as soon as she heard of the incident.

She bemoaned the ugly development and lauded the bravery of the students and staff who halted fire.

She committed to put in place a committee to investigate the unpleasant occurrence.

In the other hand, Truth Live News gathered that this is the fifth fire outbreak the state has suffered in this 2024.

Recall that the first was the SteadyFlow College of Education in Akparabong, Ikom LGA, followed by the yam barns belonging to nine farmers along Bishiri road in Obudu LGA, another was a 16-room apartment in Okuku, Yala LGA while the fourth is the11-room apartment at Edibe Edibe in Calabar South LGA.

In addition, report says some Management Staff including the Dean of Students, Prof. Tony Eyang, Director of the Physical Planning Unit, Arc Onun Ikpi and the Deputy Director, of Centre for General Studies (CGS), Barr Maxwell Eba among others joined in bemoaning the incident.
