A football-related argument took a tragic turn on Sunday, October 27, when 22-year-old Benjamin Okello was killed following a dispute with an Arsenal fan. The incident erupted after Arsenal’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Liverpool during a match watched by local fans.
According to reports from The Daily Monitor, Truthlive news learnt that the confrontation began in a local video hall where fans were celebrating and taunting each other. Tensions rose when Liverpool’s Mo Salah scored a late equalizer, prompting Manchester United supporter Okello to celebrate by throwing popcorn at the Arsenal fan, known only as Onan.
Witnesses described the scene as heated, with the initial celebration leading to a physical altercation. After the match, the two men clashed outside the video hall, resulting in Onan allegedly striking Okello with a stick, causing him to collapse. Despite being rushed to Bukinda Health Centre and later referred to Rugarama Regional Referral Hospital, Okello succumbed to his injuries.
Kaharo Sub County Chairperson Edmond Tumwesigye confirmed the tragic news, stating he received information about the brawl early Monday morning. “One of them was rushed to hospital for treatment, but sadly, he died,” he said.
District police commander Joseph Bakaleke also addressed the incident, stating that reports indicated a physical fight had taken place between supporters of rival teams. “It is alleged that when the assaulted one was taken to the hospital, he met his death,” Bakaleke noted.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for Onan, who has a history of criminal activity in the area. Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation.
Okello’s family is calling for justice as the search for the suspect continues. Bakaleke has appealed for calm, reassuring the family that efforts are underway to gather more information from witnesses to clarify the events leading to Okello’s death.
