Gunmen yet to be identified have shot dead a former female Afghanistan legislator, Mursal Nabizada and one of her bodyguards at her home in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul per police reports.

Mursal Nabizada was one of the few women who was a member of the parliament in the then United States-backed government that was removed by the Taliban militants in August 2021.

According to Al Jazeera news, Nabizada was among the few female parliamentarians who stayed in Kabul after the Taliban takeover.

Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said on Sunday, “Nabizada, along with one of her bodyguards, was shot dead at her house.”

“The security forces have started a serious investigation into the incident,” he added.

The local police chief, Molvi Hamidullah Khalid noted that the shooting happened around 3am on Sunday (22:30 GMT on Saturday).

He said Nabizada’s brother and a second security guard were badly wounded and a third security guard absconded the scene with money and jewelry.

Nabizada was elected in 2019 to represent Kabul. She was a member of the parliamentary defence commission and worked at a private nongovernmental group, the Institute for Human Resources Development and Research.
