The Nigerian federal government has nominated several prominent figures, including former governors and political aides, for ambassadorial appointments, according to reports.
Among those nominated are former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, former senator Shehu Sani, and Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
Truthlivenews gathered that the nominees are currently undergoing security screening by the Department of State Services (DSS), a standard procedure before official confirmation.
The nominees’ resumes have reportedly been sent to relevant security agencies for background checks.
A presidency official, speaking anonymously, explained that the delay in releasing the list is due to ongoing security clearance. “Only those who have been cleared are announced,” the source said. “The process is ongoing. We expect the final list before the end of the month.”
Nigeria has been without ambassadors in several countries for nearly a year following a mass recall in 2023. The absence of replacements has raised concerns about gaps in diplomatic engagement and foreign relations.
The new appointments, once finalized, are expected to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic presence globally.
