Ali Ciroma, a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, has passed away.
Ciroma died on Tuesday at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
His death was announced by a family member, Ali Ibrahim Ciroma, who is also the Secretary of the Borno State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Ali Ibrahim Ciroma said, “It is with deep sorrow that I announce the death of Comrade Ali Ciroma, former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress. The sad event occurred this evening (Tuesday, April 2) at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.”
The statement also mentioned that the burial will take place on Wednesday at 4pm at the deceased’s residence along Galadima Road near Muhammadu Shuwa Memorial Hospital (Nursing Home) in Maiduguri.
Ali Ciroma served as the president of the NLC from 1984 to 1988, until he was removed from office by the military administration of Gen Ibrahim Babangida, which dissolved the union. He later returned to unionism during the Abacha administration and was appointed as the Sole Administrator of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers.
