The Bayelsa state Governor, Douye Diri has ordered the arrest of two herders for disobeying the anti-grazing law.
The herders were arrested by the governor’s office convoy at Sampou Junction along the East-West Road in the Kolokuma/Opokuma local area of the state.
Governor Diri directed the State Chief Security Coordinator, Gen. Eric Angaye (retd.), who was also in the convoy to ensure that the arrested herders were prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Daniel Alabrah.
Truth Live News recalls that there had been palpable tension in the state following the killing of farmers allegedly perpetrated by herders at the Biseni and Zarama communities in the Yenagoa Local Government area of the state.
Following the ugly incident, Diri directed security agencies to clamp down on violators of the state’s anti-open grazing law.
According to the governor, its is annoying that despite the series of warnings, “some persons were still brazenly breaching the law against open grazing in the state.”
On March 10, 2021, the governor signed the “Livestock Breeding, Rearing and Marketing Regulation Law.
The law insisted that the enforcement agencies must ensure strict compliance to the law as well as bring violators to book.
The governor had earlier in a meeting between the Arewa community, Yenizue-Epie community youths, traditional rulers as well as stakeholders in Government House on Thursday disclosed that there’s no going back on the law.
