In a solemn announcement on Thursday, January 23, 2025, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, shared the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of Nigeria’s most distinguished elder statesmen, Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (rtd.). The 82-year-old former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) died after a prolonged illness, leaving behind a legacy etched in the annals of Nigeria’s history.
In a heartfelt statement issued from Jos, and made available to Truth Live News and other reputable media houses, Governor Mutfwang described General Useni’s death as an immense loss to Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the entire nation. He lauded the General’s exemplary leadership and unwavering dedication to public service, which had a profound impact on Nigeria’s security, governance, and political stability.
“General Useni’s commitment to peace and security, especially in Plateau State and Northern Nigeria, remains a shining testament to his patriotism and sense of duty,” the Governor remarked.
A Life of Distinguished Service
General Useni’s illustrious career spanned decades of service to Nigeria. From his pivotal roles in the military as the Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army to his appointment as Minister of Transport and later Minister of the FCT, his contributions to national development were immeasurable.
After retiring from the military, General Useni seamlessly transitioned into politics, serving as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). In 2015, under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he was elected as Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District, where he continued to champion the cause of his people and advocate for national progress.
Governor Mutfwang commended the late General’s life of service, highlighting his compassion, generosity, and dedication to the well-being of others. “He was a man of immense character whose legacy will endure in the hearts of those he touched,” the Governor said.
The passing of General Useni has drawn widespread condolences from across Nigeria. Governor Mutfwang extended his sympathies to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the family of the late General, expressing hope that God would grant them the strength to bear this irreparable loss.
In his words, “We have lost a father, a leader, and a patriot whose contributions to Plateau State and Nigeria will never be forgotten.”
The Governor also called on Nigerians to honor General Useni’s memory by upholding the values he stood for—service, unity, and peace.
As Plateau State and the nation mourn this extraordinary leader, his legacy serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of a life dedicated to service.
