Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has begun the construction of a significant new facility aimed at enhancing mental health care in the region. The Lagos State Mental Health Institute, Psychiatric and Rehabilitation Centre is being built in Ketu Ejirin, within the Epe Local Government Area.
The centre, which will occupy approximately 25 hectares, is designed to accommodate 1,000 beds. It aims to be a comprehensive rehabilitation facility where individuals with mental health conditions can receive holistic care, including recreational and vocational programs to support their full recovery and societal reintegration.
The announcement was made by Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the Governor, through a post on X (formerly Twitter). Gawat detailed, “Governor of Lagos State, Mr #jidesanwoolu is constructing the Lagos State Mental Health Institute, Psychiatric and Rehabilitation Centre, Ketu Ejirin, Epe Local Government Area.”
“It is a 1,000-bed facility sitting on about 25-hectare land, will serve as a rehabilitation centre where people with mental health illness will be taken care of. It would also be a total rehabilitation home with recreational and vocational centres for total rehabilitation of people with psychiatric illness.”
This initiative marks a significant step forward in addressing mental health challenges in Lagos State, promising improved care and support for those affected by mental health issues.
