Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, is set to hold a parliamentary election on March 11, with independence being a key campaign theme.

This development comes after US President Donald Trump expressed interest in controlling the world’s largest island.

Greenland has been a formal territory of Denmark since 1953, with Copenhagen overseeing foreign affairs, defense, and monetary policy.

A majority of Greenlanders favor independence from Denmark, but opinions are divided on the timing and potential impact on living standards.

Denmark currently provides around $1 billion annually to Greenland’s economy.

The island boasts an abundance of rare earth minerals, making its strategic location crucial for the US ballistic missile warning system.

Approximately 40,500 of Greenland’s 57,000 citizens are eligible to vote.

It could be recalled that around 27,000 people voted in the last general election in 2021.
