The U.S government on Sunday, announced that it was sending additional munitions to Israel and moving Navy warships closer to the country in response to Hamas’ unprecedented, multi-front attack on Israel.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, as reported by The New York Times, revealed that he had directed the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford and five guided-missile cruisers and destroyers, already stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, to move to the eastern part of the sea, near Israel.
Furthermore, Mr. Austin mentioned that the United States was increasing the number of Air Force fighter jets and attack planes in the region to strengthen regional deterrence efforts.
Mr. Austin emphasized that this assistance reaffirmed the United States’ unwavering support for the Israel Defense Forces and the Israeli people.
Mr. Austin’s announcement came as President Biden assured Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel in a call Sunday morning that military assistance was on its way and more would follow.
This promise of military support aimed to reassure Israelis of the United States’ commitment to their security and to demonstrate determination to Hamas and other adversaries in the region.
This action was taken despite months of tension between President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu regarding disagreements over the prime minister’s pursuit of judicial reforms viewed by many Israelis as undemocratic.
During the call, President Biden discussed the hostage-taking by Hamas terrorists, including entire families, the elderly, and young children, emphasizing that there is no justification for terrorism, and all nations must stand united against such brutal acts.
Pentagon officials clarified that the deployment of additional forces served the dual purpose of deterring Iran, Syria, and any nation or militant group from entering the conflict, while also ensuring the protection of Americans and American interests in the region through the provision of adequate ships, warplanes, and weaponry.
