A 17-year-old boy has been shot dead by a hunter in the Wula forests Boki LGA, Central Senatorial District of Cross River State, south south Nigeria.
Ferdinand Afor, was killed on Wednesday evening by unnamed Hunter who is said be a native of the neighboring Okwango community in Boki LGA.
According to eyewitnesses, the unnamed hunter has ran to hand over himself to the Bateriko Division of the Nigerian Police Force where he is currently detained.
Truth Live News gathered that Afor, 17, and his friends were said to have pitched a tent with some hunters to gather wild ukazi leaf (gnetum africanum) for sale to raise income in preparation for their New Yam festival.
The inform source said Afor and his friend slept with the hunters in the forest and while he left to pick ukasi, the hunters went to hunt.
Ofre John, a native of the village said “At about 7:00 p.m, of Wednesday it was announced that the hunter has shot him to death and claimed he thought it was an animal.”
He disclosed that the Okwango community has visited the Wula community for peace talks on the way forward.
Ofre said, “They are expected to bring three mature goats, one small one and three cocks on Monday, to discuss how to carry out a cleansing.”
Recall that a similar incident occurred two years ago when another hunter shot dead a person who went to pick bush mango (irvingia gabonensis) or Ogbono as it is popularly called despite repeated warnings to cease hunting until the season was over.
