The Oyo State Government has officially withdrawn all charges against Naomi Silekunola, a former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan. The trio had faced legal action in connection with the tragic stampede that occurred at a children’s event in December 2024, which resulted in the death of at least 35 children.
Following the court session on Thursday, the defendants were seen visibly relieved, exchanging pleasantries as they exited the courtroom. Their reactions underscored the impact of the court’s decision to dismiss the charges. Oyo State Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, confirmed the development, explaining that while the state had initially pursued prosecution due to the gravity of the incident, a reconsideration of the circumstances led to the withdrawal of the case.
“It was an unfortunate incident that led to the death of many,” Aikomo stated. “In law, whenever death occurs under unnatural circumstances, the legal system must respond. However, the affected persons showed empathy and compassion toward the victims’ families. Prosecution is not meant to be a tool for persecution but to serve justice. Given the circumstances, we felt it was in the best interest of justice to discontinue the charges. The court has struck out the case, and they are now free.”
